Do you ever have a hard time finding an original gift for someone you love? I find myself in this situation too often. Last year I was having the darndest time trying to figure out what to buy my grandma. Alhumdulilah, I was finally blessed with a great idea. I was sitting in Joann Fabrics waiting for my girls to finish shopping and trying to think of a gift to get her. I had done the bubble bath set to the hilt. Couldn’t do that one again. I made her a quilt years back so that was out. I like to send food packages with random goodies granny really likes, that you can’t find in NY, but I didn’t want to do that one this time either. I wanted to give her something I hadn’t given her before. Something original and beautiful. What to do, what to do?, I thought to myself. My girls were busy searching through Butterick pattern books and I was sitting there patiently waiting when my eyes happened upon the perfect solution to my problem- beautiful pink fleece fabric with the words “I love Grandma” and little hearts and teddy bears all over it. A thought flashed in my mind. I remembered a cute little no-sew fleece blanket my bestie made for one of her babies, years ago. Bingo! This was the perfect gift and so easy to make too. I bought the fabric and the children and I whipped it up and shipped it off to granny. She loved it!
I think this is a great DIY Eid gift. It’s easy, inexpensive and has a real personal feel to it. You could actually make one for everyone in your family and still personalize it with different fabric.
For this project you will need:
- 2.5-3 yards of fleece
- a ruler or measuring tape
Step 1: Cut your fabric in half to form two identical sized squares or rectangles. Lay them flat, right sides facing out, one on top of the other and matched up perfectly as you can get them. Trim off any excess fabric hanging over the edge.

Step 2: Cut out a 7 x 7 inch square from each corner of your blanket.
Step 3: Now you’re going to cut the fringe. Make slits on all 4 sides of your blanket, about 1 inch wide and 5-inches long.
Step 4: Tie the top and bottom fringes together to make knots all around your blanket. This is a great family project so get the rest of the fam to help too!
Step 5: Step back and admire your work. You did it, Alhumdulilah! Now it’s ready to go on your bed or in our case in a package to be shipped off to granny’s house. 🙂
