When my oldest daughter was a preteen, she really got into jewelry making. We went shopping for beautiful semi-presious stones and dazzling glass beads at Micheals and JoAnns on a weekly basis. I couldn’t help but fall in love with this craft right a long with my daughter. I learned how to make different kinds of jewelry and even added some pieces to my Etsy shop. When she taught me the macramé technique, it became my absolute favorite. There’s something very calming about this unique form of art. My daughter and I put together the following tutorial. It’s a pretty nifty project for your arts and craft class. I think it makes for a lovely Eid gift or addition to your jewelry collection. 🙂
- hemp cord
- beads with letters on them
- a piece of wood (optional)
- a small hook (optional
As you can see I made a little contraption that I use to make macramé jewelry, but you don’t have to use this. You can tape the top of your bracelet to a table, you can use a clipboard or you can use a pencil. Use whichever technique you find easiest to work with. If you’d like to make an anchor like the one I use, its really quite simple. Just take a small hook and screw it into the top of your piece of wood and that’s it!
Now, measure out a piece of cord that is about 24 inches, and one that is 144 inches, then double up the cords.
Loop your knot over the hook and begin to tie your knots. Next your going to make what is called a square knot. Below is a video, created by Abigail Aaron that shows you how to form the knots in a clear and simple way.
